What is the D.E.S.V. in Veterinary Pathology?
The D.E.S.V. (Diplôme d’Etudes Spécialisées Vétérinaires) in Veterinary Pathology is a post-graduate programme preparing veterinarians as specialists in veterinary pathology. This formation created on 1987 was certified in 1996 by the French Ministry of Agriculture.

Organization

The D.E.S.V. is co-organized by the Departments of Pathology of the four French National Veterinary Schools (Alfort, Lyon, Nantes, Toulouse). The Co-ordination board (COF) comprises 6 Professors from the four Departments of Pathology and 6 pathologists who represent all branches of the profession (pharmaceutical industry, biomedical research and veterinary diagnosis).

During three years of training, D.E.S.V. students are full-time residents in the Department of Pathology of one of the French veterinary schools.

They receive theoretical and practical training in all fields of Veterinary Pathology (small and large domestic animals, laboratory animals, poultry, fish, wild and exotic animals). They also present a research project and are encouraged to publish case reports and research work.

This post-graduate diploma provides a comprehensive high level, and thorough training in Veterinary Pathology.

So far, more than 80 Veterinary Pathologists have been trained. D.E.S.V. diplomates now occupy high positions in private Veterinary Pathology laboratories, pharmaceutical and agrochemical companies, pathology departments of veterinary schools, and biomedical research laboratories. Some of the graduates have also obtained a Ph.D., during their training in pathology or in the following years.
